The key was tax revenue as a percentage of GDP which hit 20% in 2000 and then spending as % of GDP hit 17.5% which was by far the lowest since 1973. But why was federal spending so low?? Defense…and so enter Bush/Cheney to jack up defense spending while slashing revenue as a percentage of GDP to 15.5%…and that’s how you get never ending deficits.

GWOT $ spending is only part of the picture. In 2001, Federal Debt was $5.8 Trillion. The Global War on Terror spending from '01 - '17 was approx. $5.4T (or around $315B per year, over 17 years). Overall Defense Spending, Social Security, Medicare and Welfare are the other major rails that our political class has no interest in addressing as it relates to the debt. I personally do not think our Founders envisioned our or any other governments printing fiat currency. Likewise, I think Term Limits are Constitutional Amendments needed to get us out of this morass. Republican leaders keep telling us we need to be more like the Democrats in order to get elected and we have to compromise our ideals. I was a fan of Newt for less than a year. Republican leaders keep telling us we need to be more like the Democrats in order to get elected and we have to compromise our ideals. That might be true because a large portion of the population is dumbed down at this point, but Ron DeSantis is one of the few Republicans who practices and implements what Ryan says are Republican issues. It is working in Florida so hopefully more R's will realize these issues can work on a National Level even though it will take maximum effort to implement and see results.

Well done article, totally agree. My jaw dropped watching Newt excoriate Matt Gaetz and the other republicans. I knew then which side he was on and it is NOT the side of We the People. Congress has to stop lumping together the massive bills that hide their treachery and waste. The taxpayers demand transparency and accountability. Gaetz just blew up the House - temporarily. The pearl clutchers need to get out of the way. Jim Jordan, as speaker, could really do a good job whipping those ninnies into shape. Otherwise, America continues the slide into debt, chaos and obscurity.
Single-item bills and term limits would be a welcome change that Congress will never capitulate to.

If they would go after the golden cow of defense spending, that would be great. But they would more likely go after Social Security and Medicare before they did that.
I will withhold my judgment though at this point. Defunding Ukraine would be a tremendous first step. $450 for every man woman and child in the U.S. for a country across the world with no oversight? We couldn't get that much money to a region in the the continental U.S. If we could, just think of what we might do?
