This is an interesting take on the Vision Pro.

He has some interesting points. And to be fair, it does seem to have a pretty high quality build that might justify the cost. However, I hate Apple's closed ecosystem and anti-consumer stance, and this won't be any different.

Nope. VR has been "about to take over" for 40 years, the tech has been horrible for 40 years, nobody wants it. Even gamers, supposedly the best audience, don't want it.

I think skepticism is very fair. I think this will either be a bust, or a real success. I think Apple’s put too many resources in it to let it die quickly. If it does become a success, I think it’s going to take time to find its audience.

This needs a bullet point pres for busy people without half an hour to waste.

So is this AR or VR? It seems like once again, Apple has "invented" something that has already been around for years. 🙄

Microsoft came out with the HoloLens like 8 or 9 years ago. But Microsoft is run by the smartest bunch of morons in the world. They couldn't sell water to a man dying of thirst.

More AR than VR, but both to some degree. The most apt non-Apple term would be “mixed realty.” Apple rarely claims to have “invented” a product category. What they’re saying is, “Here’s a great new product that we think you’ll love, and here’s why.”

Interesting discussion John & Jordan, thanks. I wasn’t aware until now of Vision Pro headset coming out. Ought to be interesting to see how it looks/feels on user face. I’m imaging Geordi from Star Trek w/ his VISOR ;) I’m too old school to see it as a game changer, but well noted the BlackBerry crash out when the iPhone appeared. Not many saw it coming…

I heard the Conservative Party (in Canada) recently referred to as ‘progressives that drive the speed limit’. Perhaps that describes Apple culture vs. other tech houses who are a bit farther down the ESG/DEI path?

BTW, us Volkswagen Luddites Drivers are winning in the short term. Volkswagen went ‘too far’ w/ touchscreens (listened to its customers, yay!) and are now thankfully bringing back more analog cockpit controls on all future models. Yeah, turning up/down volume should have always remain a finger dial. I drive a ‘19 GTI manual (last year w/ mostly analog dash) and have been purposely holding off trade in for newer MK7, because Volkswagen went too far on the touch screen. Apple I hope is taking note of this, on their new car (if/when that ever comes out)

Thanks, Matt! I’m a fellow Volkswagen driver as well. I had a Golf for many years and now drive a Passat.

I used to drive a Rabbit way back in the late 80’s/early 90’s then onto those sensible Hondas but my midlife crisis (so says the wife) have been a succession of GTI’s, all sticks cause it takes me back to my youth ;) My current model has tartan seats as nod back to the original Rabbit. Volkswagen R came out w/ ‘drift mode’ in ‘22. Who needs that? Yeah, that’s why I want it! But not until they bring back the nobs. Be well John, feels like you have an awesome job tracking Apple. My life has been up close watching Nike (as a key vendor) and this company has some cross over to the one you closely watch. They too were really hurt by Covid and lack of creatives F2F round the water cooler

We’ll never know what these companies could have done with the years affected by COVID. One of the many tragedies of the last few years!

Okay. Now that I’ve had a view of the new product. I can’t get Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage out of my head.

They also kinda look like goggles they wore by Winter Olympic long jumpers!

Thanks for the insight. And I agree that Apple doesn't usually claim to have invented products...they let their ignorant fans do it for them.

Ignore my saltiness. I'm sure it's a great product. I just have an unreasonable dislike for Apple. Lol

Ha! Thats ok! I used to try to get people to like the things I like. But eventually I realized that I don’t have that power. All I can do is tell them why I like what I like and ask them why they like what they like. :-)

I have no expertise beyond being just a bog-standard Apple consumer - but I’m just wondering what the chances are that a product that LOOKS so silly could ever take off? Apple are know for their aesthetics, right? Having said that, I guess the model for getting huge numbers of people to wear silly looking masks has been well proven recently - so maybe I’m wrong.
