I don't understand how backing any digital currency with hard assets (gold etc) would prevent or even mitigate surveillance/control. I'm under the impression that China is buying gold and is backing it's currency with gold but they're big into surveillance & control, no? Unless there's a difference between the yuan used for international trade & settlement and what the Chinese people use domestically.

We don’t need profit to save and store for a rainy day. A fair return on our labour will accomplish the same thing… but everyone will have the ability to save, not just a plundering few.
Our current economic system rewards selfish, anti-social behaviour and creates a hostile environment that brings out the worst in people (greed, dishonesty, vanity, etc.). People then interpret these behavioural symptoms as being an indication of our true "human nature". But if you put the same people into a healthy, co-operative economic environment, an entirely new set of social behaviours will emerge (like humility, honesty and respect). Our only true human nature is adaptability. Our behavioural capacity ranges from the very best to the worst imaginable. It's entirely up to the environmental relationships that we are a part of.
The g7 in Hiroshima last week was 90% about trying to destroy China economically, so it'll be interesting to see what tack this "summer Davos" summit takes.
