AI is just a computer program, running on very fast chips/hardware. It is only as good as its program and the databases it has permission to access. AI is Orwell's Big Brother. Reject it, don't feed it, don't train it, just say no!

I have so many comments I don't know where to begin. First off, phenomenal read here. Here are my thoughts:
1. What I find very interesting is that the issue of data centers is getting softened. The real question here is: what is the negative of data centers? And if they truly do waste resources and increase costs, should that not be the focus? The fact that data centers is being associated with the "left" makes things even more polarizing.
2. Staying with the politics, seeing that it's the "left" who support limiting data centers, it, in a way, makes "right" folks not support it, and then in-fact, look to call for more AI use, especially Trump supporters, even though they too may be conflicted on AI use. Essentially, both sides agree to the harms of AI, but that's getting lost in the politicization.
3. Love the callout here that all of the claims of AI impacts are largely speculative, but also love yet hate the fact that all one needs to do is "speculate loudly" and the winds of change will blow; self-fulling prophecies as you mentioned. Love the quote: "The alarmist method does not actually require evidence, because the prophecy is structured to be unfalsifiable. If layoffs come, that proves the danger. If they don’t, that proves we caught it just in time, or that the catastrophe is merely delayed, lurking past the next horizon." Either or, it's a win-win, even if they're wrong.
To close here: this is the power of narratives and how little to no data can still move mountains. This is why I write on calling out the BS when we see it. Its obvious you don't read these comments but I have a challenge, perform some actual journalism and interview people you are having a hyperscale data center built in what used to be a rural area and then also talk to people who live next to a datacenter. Ask about the jobs, noise, impact on the local economy. Bring a decibel reader to measure the noise. Ask to interview employees inside the building. Ask why the datacenters provide noise dampening materials for their employees while they don't do the same for dampening the sound outside the building.
One obvious flaw in your claims about the data. Citing data is what those who supported Covid did too. They claimed that the data supported their position. How do I know your claims that citing data are actually factual or that they have any relationship to reality?

Do you know what the secondary definition of mathematician was in the Oxford English Dictionary at one point? Astrologer. Not astronomer as in those who study the skies for scientific reasons. The kind of person who reads star charts and uses your astrological sign to predict your future.

Climate change is just dumb. The AI doom is less dumb but likely still dumb. There is actual real stuff going on though, unlike climate change. I will share what I see happening in my field. I think in the short term there will be some pain. Jobs will be lost but ultimately I think job functions will be changing. Good or bad I couldn't say at this point.
I am a software engineer (~20yrs experience), I work for a major corporation, and I am on the "front-lines" so to speak for some of this. AI is being forced on us. Basically there is no fighting against it, that will likely just get you pushed out and out of a job. At the moment we are told to find a use for it and start using it. Its not hard for me to imagine that if we don't start using it they will replace us with people who will. What this means is that my job function is changing, not necessarily going away. This is bad because I like what I do. But its good (I guess) because it means there is still a place for me (at least for now). Something disturbing has happened though. A lot of very senior people were "encouraged" to retire early. Not unheard of but its the people themselves that is interesting. They are all SMEs ("subject matter experts"). Just speculation but I am pretty confident a decision was made to remove those who would likely push against AI and use the cost savings to pay for it. Any knowledge lost (and there is a great amount of knowledge lost) will be made up by AI. I guess we will see how this plays out. At the moment AI is not sustainable. It costs more to use than it does to just pay someone to do the work. If the costs don't change in a drastic way then corporations are going to be left with a choice to purge real people or back off on AI use. I have to imagine this is happening at every major corporation right now, since they all share the same consultants and hivemind essentially.
What I am concerned about is the massive bets on AI and the off the charts leverage . This could end badly.The 2000 dot.Com collapse will look like nothing compared with what is possible now. One click of a mouse you can sell your entire stock portfolio now . That wasn’t a thing back then.
