As presented, this reminds me so much of my wife and I, wishing to be relevant (too young to be hippies) gave much time and effort to the Wisconsin Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign, hated Reagan because of our blanket acceptance of mainstream news, and opposed the very policy Reagan used to defeat the USSR… China is now the global enemy & I see passionate young people going nuts just as we did. I became livid when Reagan said our Freeze campaign was Soviet funded… until, surprise, under the “glasnost” which followed his successful dismantling of Russia, KGB docs proved our group WAS funded by the Soviet KGB: Funny, I didn’t feel the envelopes we opened with small donations could really pay for the fancy busses we took from Madison to Central Park, NYC, upon my later reflection!
AI development is a military necessity, which is it's only true purpose; to break things and kill people. It is already causing civilian harm, and will do a great deal more of it.
If humans were not prone to psychopathy, preventing LLM development would be the best thing for human flourishing.
Whomever wins this race, dominates, so as with every other destructive thing mankind has invented, AI becomes part of the arsenal.
So be it; we are a destructive species that profits from misery and death.
The unfortunate reality is that Trump is not especially intelligent. His idea of competing with China is unrealistic. China is run in a different and more effective way. The US is probably on its last legs. It is over $40 trillion in debt. There is no coming back from that.
China does have artificial intelligence controls. It doesn't have to incur the costs of capitalism which include frequent bailouts, new deals, tax breaks, and infrastructure built at the behest of capitalist masters. Capitalism is a great idea if you live in an Adam Smith utopia, but it's never worked in practice without huge massive infusions of government money.
Trump also seems to not realize that in a war with China, they could fold up the US military in a couple of month because the US depends so much on products made in China.
AI is another way for the tech bros to get richer. It's not really intelligence, it is a tool. But not as impactful as it is built up to be.
We definitely don't need supranational regulation, which is only ever an excuse for local governments to impose highly unpopular measures. I agree with the pint made here: after 80 years the United Nations have long outlived their useful lifetime. We need to return to strong national identities that are capable of keeping each other in check.
If this is supposed to be some type of international competition for which nation reaches the final destination first, then why would we want to co-operate with China? Especially if we are already in the lead. At least, that's what everyone appears to be saying is the goal.
If that's not the goal, then those people need to say what IS the goal. And they need to be honest in their statements.
And along the way, they can explain why five AI models are the correct amount, if they are heading us toward regulatory capture. Or else, why we need five systems of libraries.
Maybe they should invest in “Dr. Strangelove 2: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love AI.” That’ll surely get everyone on board. ROFL! It’s very clear to me that if NVIDIA isn’t worried, then they’re all blowing smoke.
Can and will AI do good? Most likely. However, AI will also be used to drive nefarious agenda using propaganda and deep fakes. It will get so good it will be impossible to separate it from reality.
Can we stop it? NO
Can we regulate it? Maybe
Will it takes jobs? Definitely
I think caution is warranted.
