I'm in Wellington and have been at the protest for hours daily. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen and the lies told by media have been atrocious.
I think NZ has actually just given up on 0 Covid as we are moving to "Stage 2" of the great political plan. In Stage 2, the virus spreads more, right before Stage 3, which means the virus spreads even more. Get it? The plan is for the virus to spread. Everything is under control and going as plan. Trust the politicians. Regardless, too many insane restrictions as if Covid 0.
I believe unvaccinated Kiwis can actually leave the country with a neg test. On the surface it looks like we can't travel but if you read the fine print we can, as long as the destination will let you in without a vaccine. The problem is returning to NZ. We have to go into a military Covid camp for 2 weeks and we have to pay thousands for this.
It is difficult because I want to visit my mother in US but last I checked my unvaccinated Kiwi husband isn't allowed in. I am allowed in to US because I have a US passport. I'm afraid of being separated from my husband if the rules suddenly change again. Also afraid of not seeing my mother again. Many of the unvaccinated in NZ are traumatized. My child is not allowed into libraries, pools, sports, restaurants. I digress. People excluded from funerals and family holidays.

Unvaxxed permanent residents of NZ (such as me) aren't allowed it at all. I knew when I left it would be a one-way ticket, and that was sadly confirmed with more restrictive entry requirements in November 2021. I have essentially had my home stolen from me. As for citizens, they can't even get in for logistical reasons now. Not enough room in quarantine hotels. It's the most despicable abrogation of human rights. Please note that while she's promising at-home quarantine for the vaccinated citizens and residents (they're not even thinking yet of tourist travelers), nothing like that has been seen in NZ since approximately April 2020 to my recollection. I'd be surprised if she delivers on it. Most of her other promises have been yanked at the last minute.

This is not correct. I am an unvaccinated permanent resident of New Zealand. I am absolutely able to leave, but will not be allowed back in here, to my home of 15 years where my wife and children live, if I do. Citizens may return, vaccinated or not, but must win a lottery to get a space in government quarantine to do so.
It is the opposite problem I would have with my native Canada. I can enter Canada, but would then be forbidden to leave and rejoin my family.
This is disgusting. Given her failed, draconian policies, there is no way this woman should ever be asked to give a commencement speech anywhere.
Time for some honourable Harvard grads (are there any?) to make some protest signs and hold them up during her address.
