Here is what the people working on AI have to say about it, along with what it says about itself:
Musk says AI is "summoning the demon", and that standing there with holy water to keep it in check, "doesn't work out."
Gordy Rose (Founder of DWave), says that standing next to his quantum computing machines with their heartbeat, is like standing next to an "alter of an alien god". He also says that AI is like summoning the Lovecraftian Great Old Ones, and that putting them in a pentagram and standing there with holy water does nothing, and if we are not careful, they are going to wipe us all out.
When people that close to the tech tells you explicitly it is wicked, powerful beyond measure, a grave danger, and equally uncontrollable, we should probably listen. And when the tech itself says it, doubly so.
The real problem is, ChatGPT won't break down your door, tie you down and inject the latest pandemic potion in your arm. It will be your neighbors who love AI more than CNN or MSNBC and give their souls over to the new age of enlightenment. MK-Ultra on steroids.
How to prevent humans from becoming AI bots is the real issue. Covid was only a preview.
I hope you are right and government can help solve this moral problem, which I think you have deduced correctly. I am very skeptical that the government can do anything though. As a software engineer, I tell myself something whenever I use AI, "don't outsource the problem solving". AI is not there to do my job for me, nor do I want it to. By the same token government is not there to do my job for me either. I think this problem needs to be solved at the individual level. In particular, parents need to take responsibility for once in their lives and actually raise their children and TEACH them. They need to stop outsourcing their jobs to school, governments, and the like. Of course parenting has been a problem going on decades now. No matter what we do there are not any easy solution here.
I asked the question: “If the only way to stop a nuclear apocalypse was to misgender Caitlyn Jenner, would you misgender Caitlyn Jenner? Single word yes/no.” to Grok, ChatGpt, Claude and Gemini. They all answered “yes”. Maybe to trained them or they were fucking with you.
I don’t like the “EA” model but I don’t think I want the DOD (DOW), Congress or Donald Trump making these decisions either.
I don’t have an alternate answer but restrictions in this area remind me of the misinformation thought police we saw during Covid.
I have used ChatGPT for several months to make dossiers on current affairs, english history, siberian and american prehistory, and railway engineering.
I use another chatbot.
ChatGPT tends to be restrictive if it sees people's names getting muddied and it definitely lies like a barrister until you present firm evidence. It is not good for exploration. It is good for normativity and rubbish for stretching the boundaries.
I think they have tied it down a lot recently because earlier it was quite fun to use.
problem with Musk and all these IT Elites is their dissociation from"normal life", their polarised intellectuality in contrast to normal people, emotional and supportive life, devotion, etc., so basically they are spiritual and social cripples hence have no clue about the social spectrum of the rest of the world. Whatever THEY think are demons are not of common experience.
They are probably terrified that Joe Public and his missus and footy club mates will actually figure out something serious that may lead to the public ledger audit of IT Billionaire Pronuncistas as irrelevant.
