"On your last trip to our committee on May 11, you stated that the NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology," he added. When Dr. Anthony Fauci confidently loudly yelled at Rand Paul in July, calling him a liar for accusing him of funding so-called "Gain-of-Function" research in Wuhan, China to make coronaviruses more transmissible to humans, the argument ultimately faded due to Fauci's unsupported claim that the research didn't technically fit the definition of "Gain-of-Function."
Now, thanks to materials (here and here) released through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit by The Intercept against the National Institutes of Health (which were unredacted enough to toss Fauci under the bus), we now know that Fauci-funded EcoHealth Alliance, a New York-based nonprofit headed by Peter Daszak, was absolutely engaged in gain-of-function research to make chimeric SARS-based coronaviruses, which they confirmed could infect human cells.
While evidence of this research has been pointed to in published studies, the FOIA release provides a key piece to the puzzle which sheds new light on what was going on.
"This is a roadmap to the high-risk research that could have led to the current pandemic," said Gary Ruskin, executive director of U.S. Right To Know, a group that has been investigating the origins of Covid-19.
And as Rutgers University Board of Governors Chemistry Professor Richard H. Ebright notes, "The documents make it clear that assertions by the NIH Director, Francis Collins, and the NIAID Director, Anthony Fauci, that the NIH did not support gain-of-function research or potential pandemic pathogen enhancement at WIV are untruthful."

Scientists Create Contagious Killer Flu Virus: U.S. Funded Research, Now Wants it to be Kept Secret

Two teams of researchers, involved in the creation of a modified version of the contagious H5N1 virus (an act funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, according to The Independent) have been asked by the administration to withhold key information to prevent potential bio-weapon threats.
The scientific community, however, has been critical of the notice, saying the government ought not to have authorized the research if they did not know how to deal with it. In addition, the scientists said the unprecedented demand to withhold research information came too late as several details had already been shared with hundreds of researchers and governments in open meetings.
The researchers, led by Albert Osterhaus of the Erasmus Medical Centre in the Netherlands and Yoshihiro Kawaoka of the University of Wisconsin, mutated the H5N1 strain of avain flu, which could not be transmitted between humans, to an airborne strain that can be transmitted in coughs and sneezes between laboratory ferrets, the best animal model of human flu. Osterhaus and Kawaoka have submitted manuscripts to journals Science and Nature, respectively.
Meanwhile, the U.S. National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB) said on Tuesday it had been working with the researchers for more then two weeks, to keep details secret.
Its the first time they have seen results where they determined they're should be restrictions, Dr. Amy Patterson, Executive Director of the NSABB, told National Journal.
The U.S. government has requested that the journals and scientists refrain from publishing the full details of they're work, Professor Paul Keim, Chairman of the NSABB said, If the data and methods are restricted by the authors and journals, it is a voluntary action on they're part.

The 1918 flu infected 500 million people across the world, including those living on remote Pacific islands, and killed more then 50 million, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in human history.
Controversial research has now found that the viral proteins making up the 1918 flu strain differ by only a few molecular building blocks from those now found in bird populations around the world.
A handful of key mutations could be all it takes to allow a 1918-like virus to spread freely between humans, scientists believe.
Researchers tested the ability of a reverse-engineered 1918-like virus made from components circulating in birds. This was than transmitted to ferrets, who's susceptibility to flu mimics that of humans.
'The worst-case scenario is the emergence of a novel avian influenza virus that exhibits high pathogenicity in humans, like H5N1 (avian flu) viruses, and efficient transmissibility in humans, like seasonal influenza viruses,' said U.S. lead scientist Professor Yoshihiro Kawaoka, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
'Our findings demonstrate the value of continued surveillance of avian influenza viruses and reinforce the need for improved influenza vaccines and antivirals to prepare for such a scenario.'
After critics called for his high-security research to be stopped, he defended the work, insisting it had potentially 'life-saving benefits.'

Researchers say recreation of Spanish flu strain highlights risk of pandemic, but critics say work puts global population at risk.
Scientists have created a life-threatening virus that closely resembles the 1918 Spanish flu strain that killed an estimated 50m people in an experiment labelled as "crazy" by opponents.
US researchers said the experiments were crucial for understanding the public health risk posed by viruses currently circulating in wild birds, but critics condemned the studies as dangerous and called on funders to stop the work.
Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison used a technique called reverse genetics to build the virus from fragments of wild bird flu strains. They then mutated the virus to make it airborne to spread more easily from one animal to another.
"The work they are doing is absolutely crazy. The whole thing is exceedingly dangerous," said Lord May, the former president of the Royal Society and one time chief science adviser to the UK government. "Yes, there is a danger, but it's not arising form the viruses out there in the animals, it's arising from the labs of grossly ambitious people."
Influenza viruses circulate freely in wild bird populations. Most remain in chickens, ducks and other birds, but occasionally strains mutate into a form that can infect humans. The H5N1 bird flu strain has killed at least 386 people since 2003, according to WHO figures. The Spanish 1918 flu is thought to have come from birds too.
Writing in the journal Cell Host and Microbe Yoshihiro Kawaoka describes how his team analysed various bird flu viruses and found genes from several strains that were very similar to those that made up the 1918 human flu virus. They combined the bird flu genes into a single new virus, making a new pathogen that was only about 3% different from the 1918 human virus.
The freshly made virus – the first of several the team created – was more harmful to mice and ferrets than normal bird flu viruses, but not as dangerous as the 1918 strain. It did not spread between ferrets and none of the animals died. But the scientists went on to mutate the virus, to see what changes could make it spread. Seven mutations later, they had a more dangerous version that spread easily from animal to animal in tiny water droplets, the same way flu spreads in humans.
Kawaoka, who led the research in a high-security lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said the work highlighted how flu viruses found in wild bird populations had the potential to adapt to humans and cause a pandemic.
Marc Lipsitch, professor of epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health, said: "I am worried that this signals a growing trend to make transmissible novel viruses willy-nilly, without strong public health rationale. This is a risky activity, even in the safest labs. Scientists should not take such risks without strong evidence that the work could save lives, which this paper does not provide," he added.
In an article published last month, Lipsitch argued that experiments like Kawaoka's could unleash a catastrophic pandemic if a virus escaped or was intentionally released from a high-security laboratory.
Simon Wain-Hobson, a virologist at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, said he feared that governments and funding bodies would only take the risks seriously once an accident had happened. "It's madness, folly. It shows profound lack of respect for the collective decision-making process we've always shown in fighting infections. If society, the intelligent layperson, understood what was going on, they would say 'What the F are you doing?'"
Exclusive: Controversial US Scientist Creates Deadly New Flu Strain For Pandemic Research

Scientists express horror over the creation of a virus that could render the human immune system defenceless.
A controversial scientist who carried out provocative research on making influenza viruses more infectious has completed his most dangerous experiment to date by deliberately creating a pandemic strain of flu that can evade the human immune system.
Yoshihiro Kawaoka of the University of Wisconsin-Madison has genetically manipulated the 2009 strain of pandemic flu in order for it to "escape" the control of the immune system's neutralising antibodies, effectively making the human population defenceless against its reemergence.
The study is not published, however some scientists who are aware of it are horrified that Dr Kawaoka was allowed to deliberately remove the only defence against a strain of flu virus that has already demonstrated its ability to create a deadly pandemic that killed as many as 500,000 people in the first year of its emergence.
Professor Kawaoka has so far kept details of the research out of the public domain but admitted today that the work is complete and ready for submission to a scientific journal. The experiment was designed to monitor the changes to the 2009 H1N1 strain of virus that would enable it to escape immune protection in order to improve the design of vaccines, he said.
"Through selection of immune escape viruses in the laboratory under appropriate containment conditions, we were able to identify the key regions [that] would enable 2009 H1N1 viruses to escape immunity," Professor Kawaoka said in an email.
Prior to his statement to The Independent, Professor Kawaoka's only known public mention of the study was at a closed scientific meeting earlier this year. He declined to release any printed details of his talk or his lecture slides.
Some members of the audience, however, were shocked and astonished at his latest and most audacious work on flu viruses, which follow on from his attempts to re-create the 1918 flu virus and an earlier project to increase the transmissibility of a highly lethal strain of bird flu.
"He took the 2009 pandemic flu virus and selected out strains that were not neutralised by human antibodies. He repeated this several times until he got a real humdinger of a virus," said one scientist who was present at Professor Kawaoka's talk.
"He left no doubt in my mind that he had achieved it. He used a flu virus that is known to infect humans and then manipulated it in such a way that it would effectively leave the global population defenceless if it ever escaped from his laboratory," he said.
Scientists Resume Efforts To Create Deadly Flu Virus, With US Government's Blessing

For more than a decade now, two scientists, one in the U.S. and one in the Netherlands, have been trying to create a deadly human pathogen from avian influenza. That's right: they are trying to turn "bird flu," which does not normally infect people, into a human flu.
Not surprisingly, many scientists are vehemently opposed to this. In mid-2014, a group of them formed the Cambridge Working Group and issued a statement warning of the dangers of this research. The statement was signed by hundreds of scientists at virtually every major U.S. and European university. (Full disclosure: I am one of the signatories.)
In response to these and other concerns, in October 2014 the U.S. government called for a "pause" in this dangerous research. NIH Director Francis Collins said that his agency would study the risks and benefits before proceeding further.
Well, four years later, the risks and benefits haven't changed, but the NIH has (quietly) just allowed the research to start again, as we learned last week in an exclusive report from Science's Jocelyn Kaiser.
I can't allow this to go unchallenged. This research is so potentially harmful, and offers such little benefit to society, that I fear that NIH is endangering the trust that Congress places in it. And don't misinterpret me: I'm a huge supporter of NIH, and I've argued before that it's one of the best investments the American public can make. But they got this one really, really wrong.
For those who might not know, the 1918 influenza pandemic, which killed between 50 and 100 million people worldwide (3% of the entire world population at the time), was caused by a strain of avian influenza that made the jump into humans. The 1918 flu was so deadly that it "killed more American soldiers and sailors during World War I than did enemy weapons."
Not surprisingly, then, when other scientists (including me) learned about the efforts to turn bird flu into a human flu, we asked: why the heck would anyone do that? The answers were and still are unsatisfactory: claims such as "we'll learn more about the pandemic potential of the flu" and "we'll be better prepared for an avian flu pandemic if one occurs." These are hand-waving arguments that may sound reasonable, but they promise only vague benefits while ignoring the dangers of this research. If the research succeeds, and one of the newly-designed, highly virulent flu strains escapes, the damage could be horrific.
One of the deadliest strains of avian flu circulating today is H5N1. This strain has occasionally jumped from birds to humans, with a mortality rate approaching 50%, far more deadly than any human flu. Fortunately, the virus has never gained the ability to be transmitted directly between humans.
That is, it didn't have this ability until two scientists, Ron Fouchier in the Netherlands and Yoshihiro Kawaoka at the University of Wisconsin, engineered it to gain this ability. (Actually, their work showed that the virus could be transmitted between ferrets, not humans, for the obvious reason that you can't ethically test this on humans.)

Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, a member of the Iranian parliament's national security and foreign affairs committee, has said the high death toll from coronavirus in Iran is due to bioterrorism, the Aftab daily has reported.
"Trump uses different strategies [to reach his goals], one of which is bioterrorism," he told the newspaper. "What has been happening in Iran is not normal.
"Even though Iranians have strongly followed hygiene guidelines, the coronavirus is still claiming lives in Iran."
Iran said on Thursday that it had identified 1,075 new cases of the virus in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number to 10,075 confirmed cases in the country.
"While in some countries of the region, where the basic hygiene measures are not employed, they don't have any problem [with the virus]," Falahatpisheh added.
Reza Nasri, an international lawyer and foreign policy analyst, has also stressed that the Trump administration is using the outbreak as a new means to intensify its maximum pressure campaign against Iran.
"Since the first diagnosed case was announced in Iran, American officials have [baselessly] accused Iran of lying and covering up the real number of diagnosed [cases] and death toll," he told the IRNA news agency.
After China and Italy, Iran is the country hardest hit by the virus. IRNA has reported 429 deaths since the beginning of the outbreak.
Research into Deadly Viruses and Biological Weapons at US Army Lab Shut Down Over Fears They Could Escape

Fort Detrick researchers banned from working with anthrax, Ebola and smallpox until procedures improved
America's main biological warfare lab has been ordered to stop all research into the deadliest viruses and pathogens over fears contaminated waste could leak out of the facility.
Fort Detrick, in Maryland, has been the epicentre of the US Army's bioweapons research since the beginning of the Cold War.
But last month the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – the government's public health body – stripped the base of its license to handle highly restricted "select agents", which includes Ebola, smallpox and anthrax.
The unusual move follows an inspection by the CDC at Fort Detrick which found several problems with new procedures used to decontaminate waste water.
For years the facility used a steam sterilisation plant to treat waste water, but after a storm flooded and ruined that machinery last year, Fort Detrick switched to a new chemical-based decontamination system.
But the CDC inspectors found the new procedures were not sufficient, with both mechanical failures causing leaks and researchers failing to properly follow the rules.
As a result, the organisation sent a "cease and desist" order to Fort Detrick, forcing it to suspend all research on select agents.
Although the United States officially abandoned its biological weapons programme in 1969, Fort Detrick has continued defensive research into deadly pathogens on the list of "select agents", including the Ebola virus, the organisms that cause the plague, and the highly toxic poison ricin.
The army's Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, based at Fort Detrick, says its primary mission today is to "protect the warfighter from biological threats" but its scientists also investigate outbreaks of disease among civilians and other threats to public health.
In recent years it has been involved in testing possible vaccines for Ebola, after several epidemics of the deadly virus in Africa.
A spokeswoman for the lab, Caree Vander Linden, said despite the CDC suspension order, there had not been any threat to public health or any leaks of hazardous material outside the base.
The shutdown of research at Fort Detrick is likely to last several months, she also told the New York Times.
This is not the first time the lab has been temporarily shut down due to failures in handling the dangerous pathogens inside.
In 2009, research at Fort Detrick was suspended because it was discovered it was storing pathogens which were not listed on its inventory.
The regulations on keeping close track of hazardous biological material were tightened after the 2001 anthrax attacks, which saw five people die after spores were posted to several media newsrooms and Democratic senators.
The FBI's chief suspect in the 2001 case, Bruce Ivins, was a senior biological weapons researcher at Fort Detrick. He killed himself in 2008, shortly before the FBI was planning to charge him with the attacks.

Japan, China and Taiwan Reports on the Origin of the Virus
The Western media quickly took the stage and laid out the official narrative for the outbreak of the new coronavirus which appeared to have begun in China, claiming it to have originated with animals at a wet market in Wuhan.
In fact the origin was for a long time unknown but it appears likely now, according to Chinese and Japanese reports, that the virus originated elsewhere, from multiple locations, but began to spread widely only after being introduced to the market.
More to the point, it appears that the virus did not originate in China and, according to reports in Japanese and other media, may have originated in the US.
Chinese Researchers Conclude the Virus Originated Outside of China
After collecting samples of the genome in China, medical researchers first conclusively demonstrated that the virus did not originate at the seafood market but had multiple unidentified sources, after which it was exposed to the seafood market from where it spread everywhere.
According to the Global Times:
A new study by Chinese researchers indicates the novel coronavirus may have begun human-to-human transmission in late November from a place other than the Huanan seafood market in Wuhan.
The study published on ChinaXiv, a Chinese open repository for scientific researchers, reveals the new coronavirus was introduced to the seafood market from another location(s), and then spread rapidly from the market due to the large number of close contacts. The findings were the result of analyses of the genome data, sources of infection, and the route of spread of variations of the novel coronavirus collected throughout China.
The study believes that patient(s) zero transmitted the virus to workers or sellers at the Huanan seafood market, the crowded market easily facilitating further transmission of the virus to buyers, which caused a wider spread in early December 2019. Chinese medical authorities – and "intelligence agencies" – then conducted a rapid and wide-ranging search for the origin of the virus, collecting nearly 100 samples of the genome from 12 different countries on 4 continents, identifying all the varieties and mutations. During this research, they determined the virus outbreak had begun much earlier, probably in November, shortly after the Wuhan Military Games.
They then came to the same independent conclusions as the Japanese researchers – that the virus did not begin in China but was introduced there from the outside.

COVID-19: Further Evidence that the Virus Originated in the United States

Japanese and Taiwanese epidemiologists and pharmacologists have determined that the new coronavirus could have originated in the US since that country is the only one known to have all five types – from which all others must have descended. Wuhan in China has only one of those types, rendering it in analogy as a kind of "branch" which cannot exist by itself but must have grown from a "tree".
The Taiwanese physician noted that in August of 2019 the US had a flurry of lung pneumonias or similar, which the Americans blamed on 'vaping' from e-cigarettes, but which, according to the scientist, the symptoms and conditions could not be explained by e-cigarettes. He said he wrote to the US officials telling them he suspected those deaths were likely due to the coronavirus. He claims his warnings were ignored.
Immediately prior to that, the CDC totally shut down the US Military's main bio-lab at Fort Detrick, Maryland, due to an absence of safeguards against pathogen leakages, issuing a complete "cease and desist" order to the military. It was immediately after this event that the 'e-cigarette' epidemic arose.
We also had the Japanese citizens infected in September of 2019, in Hawaii, people who had never been to China, these infections occurring on US soil long before the outbreak in Wuhan but only shortly after the locking down of Fort Detrick.
Then, on Chinese social media, another article appeared, aware of the above but presenting further details. It stated in part that five "foreign" athletes or other personnel visiting Wuhan for the World Military Games (October 18-27, 2019) were hospitalised in Wuhan for an undetermined infection.
The article explains more clearly that the Wuhan version of the virus could have come only from the US because it is what they call a "branch" which could not have been created first because it would have no 'seed'. It would have to have been a new variety spun off the original 'trunk', and that trunk exists only in the US. (1)
There has been much public speculation that the coronavirus had been deliberately transmitted to China but, according to the Chinese article, a less sinister alternative is possible.
If some members of the US team at the World Military Games (18-27 October) had become infected by the virus from an accidental outbreak at Fort Detrick it is possible that, with a long initial incubation period, their symptoms might have been minor, and those individuals could easily have 'toured' the city of Wuhan during their stay, infecting potentially thousands of local residents in various locations, many of whom would later travel to the seafood market from which the virus would spread like wildfire (as it did).
That would account also for the practical impossibility of locating the legendary "patient zero" – which in this case has never been found since there would have been many of them.
Next, Daniel Lucey, an infectious disease expert at Georgetown University in Washington, said in an article in Science magazine that the first human infection has been confirmed as occurring in November 2019, (not in Wuhan), suggesting the virus originated elsewhere and then spread to the seafood markets. "One group put the origin of the outbreak as early as 18 September 2019."
China 'Exposes' How the US Brought Coronavirus to the Country

For weeks after the Coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, Chinese social media platforms remained flooded with accusations that the United States has conspired against China to bring down the economic giant.
Now, the conspiracy theories have been lent credence by the Chinese government as the country's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Zhao Lijian, has claimed that it was the US that transmitted Coronavirus to China originally.
The Chinese government firmly believes that 300 athletes of the US army who participated in the 7th Military World Games in Wuhan in October last year were already infected with the virus when they landed in China. Those US military athletes are thought to be behind the spread of the deadly affliction in China.
Zhao Lijian, who was previously serving as the Chinese ambassador to Pakistan, has posted a video on Twitter implying that the US army had brought the Coronavirus in China.
In the video above, Robert Redfield, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), can be seen saying that some patients originally thought to have died from flu actually died from Coronavirus in the US, a posthumous diagnosis has confirmed.
Zhao Lijian has raised some serious questions claiming that the CDC has been caught red-handed and the US must explain the matter to China.
When did patient zero begin in the US? How many people are infected? What are the names of the hospitals? It might be the US army that brought the epidemic to Wuhan. Be transparent! Make public your data! The US owes us an explanation!
In response to Lijian's claims, several Twitter users accused the Chinese official of spreading blatant lies over social media.
However, Zhao Lijian quickly posted two separate tweets containing articles from Global Research Canada, an independent research and media organization, which claim that the Coronavirus did originate from the US.
He will be 82, above the average life expectancy, with a massive pension, savings and investments, he obviously will need a few quid to take with him to the other side.

Scientists Create Contagious Killer Flu Virus: U.S. Funded Research, Now Wants it to be Kept Secret

Two teams of researchers, involved in the creation of a modified version of the contagious H5N1 virus (an act funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, according to The Independent) have been asked by the administration to withhold key information to prevent potential bio-weapon threats.
The scientific community, however, has been critical of the notice, saying the government ought not to have authorized the research if they did not know how to deal with it. In addition, the scientists said the unprecedented demand to withhold research information came too late as several details had already been shared with hundreds of researchers and governments in open meetings.
The researchers, led by Albert Osterhaus of the Erasmus Medical Centre in the Netherlands and Yoshihiro Kawaoka of the University of Wisconsin, mutated the H5N1 strain of avain flu, which could not be transmitted between humans, to an airborne strain that can be transmitted in coughs and sneezes between laboratory ferrets, the best animal model of human flu. Osterhaus and Kawaoka have submitted manuscripts to journals Science and Nature, respectively.
Meanwhile, the U.S. National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB) said on Tuesday it had been working with the researchers for more then two weeks, to keep details secret.
Its the first time they have seen results where they determined they're should be restrictions, Dr. Amy Patterson, Executive Director of the NSABB, told National Journal.
The U.S. government has requested that the journals and scientists refrain from publishing the full details of they're work, Professor Paul Keim, Chairman of the NSABB said, If the data and methods are restricted by the authors and journals, it is a voluntary action on they're part.
The work should have been reviewed at the national or international level before being performed, and should have been restricted at a national or international level before being performed, Professor Richard Ebright, a virologist at Rutgers University in New Jersey said.

Experts have hit out at scientists who created a similar flu virus to one which killed 50 million people as part of an experiment.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison used a process called 'reverse genetics' to examine the so-called '1918 flu' strain and compare it to current variants of the virus.
But critics of the research have warned that the risks of the viruses made in laboratories far outweigh the potential public health benefits of the study's findings.
Former chief science adviser to the UK government Lord May told the Guardian: 'The work they are doing is absolutely crazy. The whole thing is exceedingly dangerous.
'They're is a danger, but its not arising from the viruses out their in the animals, its arising from the labs of grossly ambitious people.'
The 1918 flu infected 500 million people across the world, including those living on remote Pacific islands, and killed more then 50 million, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in human history.
Controversial research has now found that the viral proteins making up the 1918 flu strain differ by only a few molecular building blocks from those now found in bird populations around the world.
A handful of key mutations could be all it takes to allow a 1918-like virus to spread freely between humans, scientists believe.
Researchers tested the ability of a reverse-engineered 1918-like virus made from components circulating in birds. This was than transmitted to ferrets, who's susceptibility to flu mimics that of humans.
'The worst-case scenario is the emergence of a novel avian influenza virus that exhibits high pathogenicity in humans, like H5N1 (avian flu) viruses, and efficient transmissibility in humans, like seasonal influenza viruses,' said U.S. lead scientist Professor Yoshihiro Kawaoka, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
'Our findings demonstrate the value of continued surveillance of avian influenza viruses and reinforce the need for improved influenza vaccines and antivirals to prepare for such a scenario.'
After critics called for his high-security research to be stopped, he defended the work, insisting it had potentially 'life-saving benefits.'

Scientists Condemn 'Crazy, Dangerous' Creation Of Deadly Airborne Flu Virus

Researchers say recreation of Spanish flu strain highlights risk of pandemic, but critics say work puts global population at risk.
Scientists have created a life-threatening virus that closely resembles the 1918 Spanish flu strain that killed an estimated 50m people in an experiment labelled as "crazy" by opponents.
US researchers said the experiments were crucial for understanding the public health risk posed by viruses currently circulating in wild birds, but critics condemned the studies as dangerous and called on funders to stop the work.
Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison used a technique called reverse genetics to build the virus from fragments of wild bird flu strains. They then mutated the virus to make it airborne to spread more easily from one animal to another.
"The work they are doing is absolutely crazy. The whole thing is exceedingly dangerous," said Lord May, the former president of the Royal Society and one time chief science adviser to the UK government. "Yes, there is a danger, but it's not arising form the viruses out there in the animals, it's arising from the labs of grossly ambitious people."
Influenza viruses circulate freely in wild bird populations. Most remain in chickens, ducks and other birds, but occasionally strains mutate into a form that can infect humans. The H5N1 bird flu strain has killed at least 386 people since 2003, according to WHO figures. The Spanish 1918 flu is thought to have come from birds too.
Writing in the journal Cell Host and Microbe Yoshihiro Kawaoka describes how his team analysed various bird flu viruses and found genes from several strains that were very similar to those that made up the 1918 human flu virus. They combined the bird flu genes into a single new virus, making a new pathogen that was only about 3% different from the 1918 human virus.
The freshly made virus – the first of several the team created – was more harmful to mice and ferrets than normal bird flu viruses, but not as dangerous as the 1918 strain. It did not spread between ferrets and none of the animals died. But the scientists went on to mutate the virus, to see what changes could make it spread. Seven mutations later, they had a more dangerous version that spread easily from animal to animal in tiny water droplets, the same way flu spreads in humans.
Kawaoka, who led the research in a high-security lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said the work highlighted how flu viruses found in wild bird populations had the potential to adapt to humans and cause a pandemic.
Marc Lipsitch, professor of epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health, said: "I am worried that this signals a growing trend to make transmissible novel viruses willy-nilly, without strong public health rationale. This is a risky activity, even in the safest labs. Scientists should not take such risks without strong evidence that the work could save lives, which this paper does not provide," he added.
In an article published last month, Lipsitch argued that experiments like Kawaoka's could unleash a catastrophic pandemic if a virus escaped or was intentionally released from a high-security laboratory.

Exclusive: Controversial US Scientist Creates Deadly New Flu Strain For Pandemic Research

Scientists express horror over the creation of a virus that could render the human immune system defenceless.
A controversial scientist who carried out provocative research on making influenza viruses more infectious has completed his most dangerous experiment to date by deliberately creating a pandemic strain of flu that can evade the human immune system.
Yoshihiro Kawaoka of the University of Wisconsin-Madison has genetically manipulated the 2009 strain of pandemic flu in order for it to "escape" the control of the immune system's neutralising antibodies, effectively making the human population defenceless against its reemergence.
The study is not published, however some scientists who are aware of it are horrified that Dr Kawaoka was allowed to deliberately remove the only defence against a strain of flu virus that has already demonstrated its ability to create a deadly pandemic that killed as many as 500,000 people in the first year of its emergence.
Professor Kawaoka has so far kept details of the research out of the public domain but admitted today that the work is complete and ready for submission to a scientific journal. The experiment was designed to monitor the changes to the 2009 H1N1 strain of virus that would enable it to escape immune protection in order to improve the design of vaccines, he said.
"Through selection of immune escape viruses in the laboratory under appropriate containment conditions, we were able to identify the key regions [that] would enable 2009 H1N1 viruses to escape immunity," Professor Kawaoka said in an email.
Prior to his statement to The Independent, Professor Kawaoka's only known public mention of the study was at a closed scientific meeting earlier this year. He declined to release any printed details of his talk or his lecture slides.
Some members of the audience, however, were shocked and astonished at his latest and most audacious work on flu viruses, which follow on from his attempts to re-create the 1918 flu virus and an earlier project to increase the transmissibility of a highly lethal strain of bird flu.
"He took the 2009 pandemic flu virus and selected out strains that were not neutralised by human antibodies. He repeated this several times until he got a real humdinger of a virus," said one scientist who was present at Professor Kawaoka's talk.
"He left no doubt in my mind that he had achieved it. He used a flu virus that is known to infect humans and then manipulated it in such a way that it would effectively leave the global population defenceless if it ever escaped from his laboratory," he said.

Scientists Resume Efforts To Create Deadly Flu Virus, With US Government's Blessing

For more than a decade now, two scientists, one in the U.S. and one in the Netherlands, have been trying to create a deadly human pathogen from avian influenza. That's right: they are trying to turn "bird flu," which does not normally infect people, into a human flu.
Not surprisingly, many scientists are vehemently opposed to this. In mid-2014, a group of them formed the Cambridge Working Group and issued a statement warning of the dangers of this research. The statement was signed by hundreds of scientists at virtually every major U.S. and European university. (Full disclosure: I am one of the signatories.)
In response to these and other concerns, in October 2014 the U.S. government called for a "pause" in this dangerous research. NIH Director Francis Collins said that his agency would study the risks and benefits before proceeding further.
Well, four years later, the risks and benefits haven't changed, but the NIH has (quietly) just allowed the research to start again, as we learned last week in an exclusive report from Science's Jocelyn Kaiser.
I can't allow this to go unchallenged. This research is so potentially harmful, and offers such little benefit to society, that I fear that NIH is endangering the trust that Congress places in it. And don't misinterpret me: I'm a huge supporter of NIH, and I've argued before that it's one of the best investments the American public can make. But they got this one really, really wrong.
For those who might not know, the 1918 influenza pandemic, which killed between 50 and 100 million people worldwide (3% of the entire world population at the time), was caused by a strain of avian influenza that made the jump into humans. The 1918 flu was so deadly that it "killed more American soldiers and sailors during World War I than did enemy weapons."
Not surprisingly, then, when other scientists (including me) learned about the efforts to turn bird flu into a human flu, we asked: why the heck would anyone do that? The answers were and still are unsatisfactory: claims such as "we'll learn more about the pandemic potential of the flu" and "we'll be better prepared for an avian flu pandemic if one occurs." These are hand-waving arguments that may sound reasonable, but they promise only vague benefits while ignoring the dangers of this research. If the research succeeds, and one of the newly-designed, highly virulent flu strains escapes, the damage could be horrific.
One of the deadliest strains of avian flu circulating today is H5N1. This strain has occasionally jumped from birds to humans, with a mortality rate approaching 50%, far more deadly than any human flu. Fortunately, the virus has never gained the ability to be transmitted directly between humans.
That is, it didn't have this ability until two scientists, Ron Fouchier in the Netherlands and Yoshihiro Kawaoka at the University of Wisconsin, engineered it to gain this ability. (Actually, their work showed that the virus could be transmitted between ferrets, not humans, for the obvious reason that you can't ethically test this on humans.)

Bioterrorism blamed for high coronavirus death toll
Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, a member of the Iranian parliament's national security and foreign affairs committee, has said the high death toll from coronavirus in Iran is due to bioterrorism, the Aftab daily has reported.
"Trump uses different strategies [to reach his goals], one of which is bioterrorism," he told the newspaper. "What has been happening in Iran is not normal.
"Even though Iranians have strongly followed hygiene guidelines, the coronavirus is still claiming lives in Iran."
Iran said on Thursday that it had identified 1,075 new cases of the virus in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number to 10,075 confirmed cases in the country.
"While in some countries of the region, where the basic hygiene measures are not employed, they don't have any problem [with the virus]," Falahatpisheh added.
Reza Nasri, an international lawyer and foreign policy analyst, has also stressed that the Trump administration is using the outbreak as a new means to intensify its maximum pressure campaign against Iran.
"Since the first diagnosed case was announced in Iran, American officials have [baselessly] accused Iran of lying and covering up the real number of diagnosed [cases] and death toll," he told the IRNA news agency.
After China and Italy, Iran is the country hardest hit by the virus. IRNA has reported 429 deaths since the beginning of the outbreak.

Research into Deadly Viruses and Biological Weapons at US Army Lab Shut Down Over Fears They Could Escape

Fort Detrick researchers banned from working with anthrax, Ebola and smallpox until procedures improved
America's main biological warfare lab has been ordered to stop all research into the deadliest viruses and pathogens over fears contaminated waste could leak out of the facility.
Fort Detrick, in Maryland, has been the epicentre of the US Army's bioweapons research since the beginning of the Cold War.
But last month the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – the government's public health body – stripped the base of its license to handle highly restricted "select agents", which includes Ebola, smallpox and anthrax.
The unusual move follows an inspection by the CDC at Fort Detrick which found several problems with new procedures used to decontaminate waste water.
For years the facility used a steam sterilisation plant to treat waste water, but after a storm flooded and ruined that machinery last year, Fort Detrick switched to a new chemical-based decontamination system.
But the CDC inspectors found the new procedures were not sufficient, with both mechanical failures causing leaks and researchers failing to properly follow the rules.
As a result, the organisation sent a "cease and desist" order to Fort Detrick, forcing it to suspend all research on select agents.
Although the United States officially abandoned its biological weapons programme in 1969, Fort Detrick has continued defensive research into deadly pathogens on the list of "select agents", including the Ebola virus, the organisms that cause the plague, and the highly toxic poison ricin.
The army's Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, based at Fort Detrick, says its primary mission today is to "protect the warfighter from biological threats" but its scientists also investigate outbreaks of disease among civilians and other threats to public health.
In recent years it has been involved in testing possible vaccines for Ebola, after several epidemics of the deadly virus in Africa.
A spokeswoman for the lab, Caree Vander Linden, said despite the CDC suspension order, there had not been any threat to public health or any leaks of hazardous material outside the base.
The shutdown of research at Fort Detrick is likely to last several months, she also told the New York Times.
This is not the first time the lab has been temporarily shut down due to failures in handling the dangerous pathogens inside.
In 2009, research at Fort Detrick was suspended because it was discovered it was storing pathogens which were not listed on its inventory.
The regulations on keeping close track of hazardous biological material were tightened after the 2001 anthrax attacks, which saw five people die after spores were posted to several media newsrooms and Democratic senators.
The FBI's chief suspect in the 2001 case, Bruce Ivins, was a senior biological weapons researcher at Fort Detrick. He killed himself in 2008, shortly before the FBI was planning to charge him with the attacks.

In 1976, my RN mother talked me into getting a Swine flu shot with her. Later that day, I developed the most severe pain I'd ever felt in my lower left back, and she took me to the hospital. After spending the night in the hospital with a decreasing Valium drip following a diagnosis of Guillain-Barre syndrome, the next morning I was waiting next to the nurse's station for my mother to finish a consult with the attending and releasing physician. The head nurse told me that I should consider myself lucky to be alive, because they'd had patients come in with less severe symptoms than mine that went to the morgue, and that I should never take another vaccine. I have followed that nurse's advice faithfully.
Not sure if you know this, but when less than 50 people died, the swine flu vaccine program was stopped.
Last year I went to my PCP appt. The nurse mentioned that I was due for the shingles vaccine. I told her that the shingles vaccine had a black warning for Guillain-Barre syndrome. She had a blank look on her face...she did not know. So, how could a person have informed consent? Luckily I had printed out the FDA warning for the shingles vax and showed her.

Japan, China and Taiwan Reports on the Origin of the Virus
The Western media quickly took the stage and laid out the official narrative for the outbreak of the new coronavirus which appeared to have begun in China, claiming it to have originated with animals at a wet market in Wuhan.
In fact the origin was for a long time unknown but it appears likely now, according to Chinese and Japanese reports, that the virus originated elsewhere, from multiple locations, but began to spread widely only after being introduced to the market.
More to the point, it appears that the virus did not originate in China and, according to reports in Japanese and other media, may have originated in the US.
Chinese Researchers Conclude the Virus Originated Outside of China
After collecting samples of the genome in China, medical researchers first conclusively demonstrated that the virus did not originate at the seafood market but had multiple unidentified sources, after which it was exposed to the seafood market from where it spread everywhere.
According to the Global Times:
A new study by Chinese researchers indicates the novel coronavirus may have begun human-to-human transmission in late November from a place other than the Huanan seafood market in Wuhan.
The study published on ChinaXiv, a Chinese open repository for scientific researchers, reveals the new coronavirus was introduced to the seafood market from another location(s), and then spread rapidly from the market due to the large number of close contacts. The findings were the result of analyses of the genome data, sources of infection, and the route of spread of variations of the novel coronavirus collected throughout China.
The study believes that patient(s) zero transmitted the virus to workers or sellers at the Huanan seafood market, the crowded market easily facilitating further transmission of the virus to buyers, which caused a wider spread in early December 2019. Chinese medical authorities – and "intelligence agencies" – then conducted a rapid and wide-ranging search for the origin of the virus, collecting nearly 100 samples of the genome from 12 different countries on 4 continents, identifying all the varieties and mutations. During this research, they determined the virus outbreak had begun much earlier, probably in November, shortly after the Wuhan Military Games.
They then came to the same independent conclusions as the Japanese researchers – that the virus did not begin in China but was introduced there from the outside.
Japan's Media: The Coronavirus May Have Originated in the US
In February of 2020, the Japanese Asahi news report (print and TV) claimed the coronavirus originated in the US, not in China, and that some (or many) of the 14,000 American deaths attributed to influenza may have in fact have resulted from the coronavirus.

COVID-19: Further Evidence that the Virus Originated in the United States

Japanese and Taiwanese epidemiologists and pharmacologists have determined that the new coronavirus could have originated in the US since that country is the only one known to have all five types – from which all others must have descended. Wuhan in China has only one of those types, rendering it in analogy as a kind of "branch" which cannot exist by itself but must have grown from a "tree".
The Taiwanese physician noted that in August of 2019 the US had a flurry of lung pneumonias or similar, which the Americans blamed on 'vaping' from e-cigarettes, but which, according to the scientist, the symptoms and conditions could not be explained by e-cigarettes. He said he wrote to the US officials telling them he suspected those deaths were likely due to the coronavirus. He claims his warnings were ignored.
Immediately prior to that, the CDC totally shut down the US Military's main bio-lab at Fort Detrick, Maryland, due to an absence of safeguards against pathogen leakages, issuing a complete "cease and desist" order to the military. It was immediately after this event that the 'e-cigarette' epidemic arose.
We also had the Japanese citizens infected in September of 2019, in Hawaii, people who had never been to China, these infections occurring on US soil long before the outbreak in Wuhan but only shortly after the locking down of Fort Detrick.
Then, on Chinese social media, another article appeared, aware of the above but presenting further details. It stated in part that five "foreign" athletes or other personnel visiting Wuhan for the World Military Games (October 18-27, 2019) were hospitalised in Wuhan for an undetermined infection.
The article explains more clearly that the Wuhan version of the virus could have come only from the US because it is what they call a "branch" which could not have been created first because it would have no 'seed'. It would have to have been a new variety spun off the original 'trunk', and that trunk exists only in the US. (1)
There has been much public speculation that the coronavirus had been deliberately transmitted to China but, according to the Chinese article, a less sinister alternative is possible.
If some members of the US team at the World Military Games (18-27 October) had become infected by the virus from an accidental outbreak at Fort Detrick it is possible that, with a long initial incubation period, their symptoms might have been minor, and those individuals could easily have 'toured' the city of Wuhan during their stay, infecting potentially thousands of local residents in various locations, many of whom would later travel to the seafood market from which the virus would spread like wildfire (as it did).
That would account also for the practical impossibility of locating the legendary "patient zero" – which in this case has never been found since there would have been many of them.
Next, Daniel Lucey, an infectious disease expert at Georgetown University in Washington, said in an article in Science magazine that the first human infection has been confirmed as occurring in November 2019, (not in Wuhan), suggesting the virus originated elsewhere and then spread to the seafood markets. "One group put the origin of the outbreak as early as 18 September 2019."

China 'Exposes' How the US Brought Coronavirus to the Country

For weeks after the Coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, Chinese social media platforms remained flooded with accusations that the United States has conspired against China to bring down the economic giant.
Now, the conspiracy theories have been lent credence by the Chinese government as the country's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Zhao Lijian, has claimed that it was the US that transmitted Coronavirus to China originally.
The Chinese government firmly believes that 300 athletes of the US army who participated in the 7th Military World Games in Wuhan in October last year were already infected with the virus when they landed in China. Those US military athletes are thought to be behind the spread of the deadly affliction in China.
Zhao Lijian, who was previously serving as the Chinese ambassador to Pakistan, has posted a video on Twitter implying that the US army had brought the Coronavirus in China.
In the video above, Robert Redfield, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), can be seen saying that some patients originally thought to have died from flu actually died from Coronavirus in the US, a posthumous diagnosis has confirmed.
Zhao Lijian has raised some serious questions claiming that the CDC has been caught red-handed and the US must explain the matter to China.
When did patient zero begin in the US? How many people are infected? What are the names of the hospitals? It might be the US army that brought the epidemic to Wuhan. Be transparent! Make public your data! The US owes us an explanation!
In response to Lijian's claims, several Twitter users accused the Chinese official of spreading blatant lies over social media.
However, Zhao Lijian quickly posted two separate tweets containing articles from Global Research Canada, an independent research and media organization, which claim that the Coronavirus did originate from the US.
