You can have a republic or an empire. Pick one. Republics are relatively rare in history so it is hard to get a significant correlation but there are examples. The Roman Republic could not cope with governing an empire (which predated the Empire) and devolved into civil strife and eventually civil war. The Venetian and Dutch republics were victims of overstretch and could sustain themselves. The American republic is showing the strain of trying to run the world
I would add that in addition to our elected leaders, American citizens certainly need to take more responsibility for our collective and individual outcomes. We often don't take elections seriously enough, and most people don't take the time to study how our votes will direct our future.
We are also far too willing to place the blame on others and at the same time ask for handouts and avoid self-reliance.
A lot of what Schachtel states here should be (but isn't) taught in grade school.
The USA, like the old gray mere, ain't what she used to be. The country has drifted far from what the Founding Fathers intended. Those Patriots offered a lot of good advice, most of which, unfortunately, has not been heeded. We are over extended and under funded (at least for what the Congress likes to fund). A large part of our problem is caused by unconstitutional government, like the Federal Reserve and the administrative Deep State. Sadly, we, the people, are unaware and uneducated about our government and what it does. The Founding Fathers knew that the proper functioning of the government was dependent on the citizens being informed and active. We have failed in our duty to keep the government on its toes. We have fallen a long way from our days of glory, but, hopefully, the events of the last few years have the citizens agitated enough to make sure the government stays on its proper course.
Hopefully the next gang of "Founding Fathers" gives us NO government of any kind. In the end, they all suck (governments that is) because they are invaded by putrid control freaks, anti-humans and scared to death little turds.
“If you can keep it”. Still a work in progress with various factions seeking advantage. Only we voters can restrain those factions and too many ignore their responsibilities. In recent times the politicos abandon their responsibilities in favor of partisan policies that try to amass power ignoring people’s concerns. Voting has become corrupted and needs reform.
Do essays forecasting disaster have any constructive purpose? It seems the general public already exhibits a troubling proclivity for ignorance, as observed by the late Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
It may also be time for a remaking of the world. The current model may be unsustainable. MAGA is designed to strengthen our nation, from the inside out, rather than outside in. Our values, as a nation are in shambles and not worthy of exportation. The international powers have tried (and have almost succeeded) in taking our property, our manufacturing, even our children. Self protection is our best gift to the world. Our new power will be one of example - a beacon of hope for other nations that seek a republic, if they can keep it.
"America has facilitated a system that has witnessed an absence of a major world war for 80 years." No, the U.S. has fomented a state of constant war for decades. Over 220,00 dead in Afghanistan, over 2 million dead in Iraq, tens of thousands dead in Libya and Syria, and countless others -- all nations that never once attacked the U.S. Every single one of these acts of war are illegal under international law, which the U.S. arrogantly flouts while just proclaiming that it is enforcing a nebulous "rules based order." We maintain over 800 military bases around the world and are spending trillions to maintain a system that repeatedly backfires on us while bankrupting our own treasury. Look at the terrorists and warlords now running Afghanistan, Libya and Syria. We have created a legacy of mass carnage and terrorism. And you want to maintain it? Not only that, you refer to anyone who questions this state of affairs as "insane," based on the bogeyman threat that China wants to rule the world instead? Where has China used military means against anyone? How many military bases does it have in other countries?
No, it is your specious defense of a bloody empire that is insane. You just lost yourself a subscriber. You have a right to spew such nonsense but I'll be damned if I'm going to pay for it.
The Marxist communist invasion over the past generations have used CRT,DEI,ESG in all their evilness. This has ruined our republic and our culture.Open borders, money printing (MMT) have been instrumental in aiding and abetting this evil…
Greed and moral corruption have replaced morals, ethics and values. We have one last chance to put America first and it’s right now, right here.

Terrific explanation and overview in a few words! Thank you, Jordan, and good timing, too 🇺🇲
American hegemony in global affairs remains essential for both our country and the forces of self-government to thrive.
Atlantic Council?
Council on Foreign Relations?
Henry Kissinger?
SMH. Yeah the unproductive class loves slavery and tyranny.
I sort of understand your rhetorical questions but if you have time, would you elaborate?
